05 Oct Elaphe’s Audi R8 is faster than Audi’s own R8 e-tron
Elaphe Propulsion Technologies has been working with electric vehicles for over a decade. Recently they have changed their focus from niche electric vehicles to tuning solutions for mass production. The company has now established manufacturing operations in China with the capacity to produce 20,000 units a year. It is gathering funding to increase that.
They have now amassed over 100 employees who are focused solely on R&D. As a result of their new focus, a team of just three engineers has used a few in-wheel motors to transform the power of an Audi R8 supercar in order to test them in real-world situations. The bulk of the work, however, was caused on the car;’s internal combustion system.
This isn’t the first term that Elaphae has made a statement. They also created a stunning BMW X6 a couple of months ago. But this new Audi R8 with electronic in-wheel drive represents a step up in terms of Elaphe’s production-ready products. Although it is still in the early stages of development, the vehicle was created to validate whether the company’s theory that new in-wheel electric motors could deliver the performance that the company expected. As early results show, the team was right, The in-wheel motors can transform the Audi R8 into a car capable of going from 0 to 100 kph in a little over 3.5 seconds. Compare this to the Audi R8 e-tron which goes from zero to 100 kph in 3.9 seconds. Despite being delighted with these results, the team is looking to go below three in further testing due to tuning the system further. This would make it gaster that Tesla’s Model 3 performance configuration which goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
Let’s look at the in-wheel driver motors in more detail. They have a combined 6,000 Nm of torque and 440 kWh of power. All of the equipment and controls were built in-house by the team. That speaks volumes about their technical ability. Even more impressive is the fact that the Audi R8 installation isn’t even finely tuned yet—the performance could get even better. The motors themselves are tiny and they are installed into the wheels so that the team can remove gearboxes and transmissions, with the motors powering the wheels directly.
Impressive, right? If you want to tune your Audi to increase performance, Gerber Motorsport can help. We may not be able to get your zero to 60 that fast, unless you bring in an Audi R8, of course, but you’ll be amazed at the transformation we can achieve. Get in touch today for more information.
